OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society’s podcast has been named a finalist in the 2026 Signal Awards.
The April 2026 episode of “A Very OK Podcast” is a finalist in the Genre - History category. In the episode, co-hosts Trait Thompson and Dr. Bob Blackburn discuss “The Grapes of Wrath” and how it portrays a difficult period in American history. The story of the Joad family from Sallisaw caused some people to sympathize with the plight of migrant farmers while others saw it as a mischaracterization of reality. Thompson and Blackburn talk with film historian Elizabeth Anthony about the history surrounding the circumstances depicted in the book and movie, the connection to Route 66 and the image the book and movie presented of Oklahomans.
As a result of being named a finalist in the Genre - History category, “A Very OK Podcast” is also in the running for a Listener’s Choice Award in the same category. Public voting ends on Thursday, October 15. Winners in all categories will be announced on Tuesday, October 20.
The reboot of “A Very OK Podcast” started in March 2021. Since then, there have been 61 episodes released on topics like Spiro Mounds, the Battle of the Washita and Oklahoma’s All-Black towns. The podcast has had more than 79,000 downloads in that time.
